James was born a perfectly normal baby on 16th december 2008. he managed to spend his first 4 weeks at home enjoying Christmas with his mummy and daddy. However on the 16th January 2009 the midwife was concerned that James had not gained any weigh...infact he had lost it and that this was not normal at his age. We were admitted to Warrington hospital where at first they thought it was a feeding issue. they did various tests but all came back negative. After 4 weeks they transferred us to Alder hey neurosciences ward where the doctors were yet again confused as to what was causing james failure to thrive, reflux and floppiness. they opeted to do a muscle biopsy, skin biopsy, MRI and lumber puncture and after 3 weeks of living at Alder hey they transferred us back to warrington with a view to put a plan together so we could be at home while waiting for test reults. That plan was made and although anxious to know what was up with our baby boy we were keen to get some time at home with him....that never came James went up and down like a yo-yo and continued to either remain the smae weight or loose it...therefore the hospital kept moving the goals posts as to when we could go home. unfortunately James picked up a cold and became unwell.....we were told we were being moved to St James in Leeds but were not told why. On arrival there we were told that James had accute liver failure andthat since they were now 90% sure it was a form of mitochnodrial disease he was unable to have a liver transplant. Since they decided there was nothing they could do and James actually looked quite well they decided to transfer us 10 hours later back to warrington hospital where we were told James was going to die and what options there were. james managed to live for another week quite happy and content despite all the drugs etc he was being given...we even got a few giggles and smile off him. it was so hard knowing that his days were numbered. then on March 19th James was struggling to maintain his temperature and was put in a warming cot. i help him that day and just knew that come the morning he would gain his angel wings...people told me not to be silly but i just knew. A few minutes before james fell asleep he gave me the most lovely smile that I will never forget as if to say he was OK and sadly at 5.40 am 20th Marcg James gained hs wings.
Just an update: We did receive news of the condition that James had although it took several months. It was a really rare form of mitochondrial disease called MtDNA Depletion Syndrome. It is really really rare and there is a 1 in 4 chance with every pregnancy of this happening again....so lots of decisions to make.
